Sunday Cleaning

Happy first day of Fall, everyone! I'm seriously trying not to multi-task too much today. My main goal is to get my filesystem cleaned up. Since it's been a while since I've cleaned up all of my disk drives, I figured that Fall Cleaning would be a good idea.

I've been running FSlint to go through and weed out any duplicates files. It's currently scanning one of my really big partitions, which leaves me with some time to make a much overdue post.

Why the need, all of a sudden, to clean up my drives and make more space? Well, I have a confession to make, Dear Reader. You might find it hard to believe, but I'm feeling the need to roam the Linux Distribution jungle again. But, since I have things setup the way that I want them on my system, I am going to tap into the powers of virtualization with VirtualBox.

Actually, to be 100% honest, I'm not really roaming into unchartered territory - I'm setting up a virtual system to use with Gentoo. I haven't had a Gentoo install in a little bit over a year and I miss certain things about it. This weekend I picked up a copy of Linux Journal and it had an article about Gentoo. This, of course, increased my sense of nostaligia. So, for my little virtualization project, I'm going to setup a Gentoo server with nginx, Rails, and MySQL. Although, I am considering putting PostgreSQL on it.

While I'm waiting for FSlint to help me find my duplicated files, I'm also mapping out a new theme (well, Scribbish modified) for this blog. I'm not really feeling the desire to go through the layout, styles, views, etc, and make an entirely new theme, so I've decided just to modify the Scribbish theme and go from there. I've downloaded XaraXL and have been playing around in Gimp. I've also been looking at different CSS gallery sites, trying to get some inspiration.

And now you know why the first paragraph says that I'm trying not to multi-task too much. :)

Distribution Annoyance

I really wish I would have seen this: http://sidux.com/Article420.html before I did an apt-get dist-upgrade. Hopefully this gets straightened out soon.

I'm totally annoyed, which seems to be the theme for the day.

And, my system's fan keeps coming on. I have an uneasy feeling about that.

Feh.

I'm still here...

Really. I haven't gone away. I promise.

So, here's a quick rundown on things:

Ruby on Rails

Lately I've been doing the majority of my programming in Ruby and Rails. Things are becoming second nature for me and slowly but surely I'm getting self-confidence when it comes to "am I doing this right?" That's a great feeling to have.

I was discussing it with someone lately who was telling me that all I really need is the self-confidence. That's great to hear from an observer.

Linux

I've been trying to get a Linux install up and running on my P3-500 toybox. Unfortunately the CD-Rom drive is fubarred, so I've been taking the CD drive out of my main PC and putting it into the other system in order to get things working on it. I installed OpenSuse and immediately felt dirty. I need this as a Windows replacement box, so I wanted something relatively 'user-friendly'. I'm downloading Mint right now and we'll see how that works out.

Life in General

While spring is officially here, when I look out my window and see several feet of snow still on the ground, and when I walk outside into 7 degree weather first thing in the morning, I can't help but wonder if spring will ever really get here. I'm looking forward to the Summer - except for the bees, wasps, hornets, and other immensely frightening creatures. I can't wait to be back in shorts and t-shirts and flip flops. I love my Tevas.

Anyway, I hope to update more in the next couple of days or over the weekend. I'm posting this from Safari in Windows and every few moments I get the notification that a script is slow. So, enough is enough. It's harshing my mellow.
